Social Issues – Lebanon

Lebanon is one of the oldest countries in the Middle East and has beautiful views. Lebanon was called “the land of milk and honey” in the bible. Paris of the East is the nickname for Beirut. Shakira is the famous singer from Lebanon. There are five countries which are surrounding Lebanon - Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Cyprus and Turkey.

In 1943 the Christians got more power than Muslims in running the country after independence from France. In addition to that after Arab-Israeli war the Muslims refugees’ flooded to Lebanon and these circumstances contributed to increased tensions between Muslims and Christians. In 1975, the tensions reached their peak when a radical Christian group attacked and killed a bus full of Palestinians in downtown Beirut. As a result the revenge killings followed, and violence began to spiral out of control and Syria sent 20000 troops to root out and quash radical Muslims as a result. In 1982, the Israeli army invaded the city with the aim of removing the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).However in 1989, the peace deal occurred between them and an international force entered the country and this contributed to create a new situation which made a better equalized situation between Christians and Muslims with a new Lebanese parliament. There were human and economic costs of that conflict. Between 150000-200000 people died, 300 were wounded and economy was paralyses.

Nowadays, us-style shopping malls have sprouted up across the city, building cranes are every where. Newly built highways carry high-speed traffic and teenage girls on roller blades share the wide walkway with women dressed in black dresses, robe, and scarves and these are good signs of social and economic recovery in Beirut. But currently there are a lot of problems in the country. 300000 young people have left the country and the life is too expensive especially the electricity. Unfortunately the foreigners are investing in Lebanon without care of the poor people.

Introductoin to Global Warming

The carbon dioxide and other gasses help to keep the Earth warm and they are good for living. However, when the humans become selfish and careless of the safety of the environment by burning fuels like coal, gas and oil. As a result the environment suffers the amount of carbon dioxide and temperature has increased rapidly. Accordingly we got exceptional circumstances, the number of hurricanes has increased in last 30 years, the malaria has spread very fast, and the flow of ice from glacier has doubled over the past decade.

In case global warming continues, the scientists expect deaths will double in 25 years, sea levels could rise, the Arctic Ocean could be ice free in summer by 2050, a lot of animals could be extinct, and heat will be more frequent and more intense.

Finally, together only we can change this circumstances by trying to find out a good solution to minimize the heat in the atmosphere. We should advise the people that the health is the wealth and we should follow the safety environment rules to get safe and clean atmosphere.

Global Warming – An Inconvenient Truth

(this video shows part of Al Gore presentation)

Inconvenient Truth is a about global warming which is presented by former United States Vice President Al Gore and directed by Davis Guggenheim. Al Gore wants to give scientific information about a climate change, Global warming, and its controversy. Al Gore described the nature that is around him at the beginning. He started his presentation seriously and he put natural tones at the start of the presentation.

Al Gore tried to say the people are effecting the environment badly and they don’t realize it because they don’t want to waste their time or money to solve this problem. Mountain glaciers are melting faster than ever, because the global warming is increasing. Therefore the rivers and springs will evaporate rapidly especially when we come to know that 40% of people on earth get their drinking water from Himalaya Mountains. Al Gore shows us the two graphs of temperature in the Northern Hemisphere and CO2 concentrations in the past 1000 years and he illustrated that the CO2 and temperature are increasing together. This means that the CO2 is the storage of the temperature in earth atmosphere. The consequences of the ocean temperature rising are raising sea levels, glacier retreat, arctic shrinkage, and altered patterns of agriculture are cited as direct consequences. Included extreme weather events by human, an expansion of tropical diseases, changes in the timing seasonal, and drastic economic impact. Some buildings and roads on permafrost will collapsed because of the high temperature. Al Gore explained that sea level would rise up to 20 feet and that would be caused by melting either West Antarctica or Greenland in the future. Al Gore mentioned three factors which to the contribute collision between civilization and the earth. The first of these factors is more population, which means more water supply and food will be needed. Poverty and disease will increase in the countries. The second factor is new technology used for the wrong reasons; for example, weapons. Also a new technology is polluting the natural on the earth. He said that we have to change our lifestyle and we must be more efficient to reduce the CO2 emission. America as a country has done great things when they face an environment issues. One of the Americans achievements is the ozone layer issue.
